The station is moved

Everyone,
Well it is done, the station is sitting on her new foundation and after a little work to fine tune where she sits, she can be taken off the rollers that carried her and she will come to rest on the foundation.  This work will take place on Monday which means we can probably start putting things back in by later next week.  I have a ttached a few photos and will put more in a folder on the Yahoo Group so you can see what it looks like now that she is moved.
I want to thank everyone who helped make this day possible and all those who were able to take time off of work to make it for the weekday move.  As I mentioned the other day, we woudl have much rather make the move on a Saturday so everyone could make it, but we felt getting the building moved today was better than waiting a few weeks for the next time we had a free Saturday.
Please watch your e-mail for the schedule of days that we are planning to go work getting stuff back in the building, we are going to need all the hands we can get.
Thanks,
KC

station update 9/16

Everyone,

This morning the station was moved up and onto the foundation by about 15 feet in preparation for the final move at 2pm on Friday. Everything is going very well and the station has stood up well to the move. Now that it is sitting partly on the foundation the rest of the move is expected to go well, lets hope anyhow.

As long as everything goes well I am thinking we should probably get some of the stuff we have stored in various peoples houses back into the station. So if you are coming for the move or can make it later in the afternoon / early evening and can lend a hand that would be great.

I hope to see you all there,
KC

Hawthorne Station move 9/15

Everyone,

This e-mail is a long time in the making and is arriving much later than I had hoped, but like the old saying goes, better late than never. Yesterday Hawthorne station made it’s first move towards it new home, when the mover did a “test” move and it went so well he ended up moving it about 30 feet. Today (Thursday) he will move it some more and get it positioned at the edge of the new foundation in preparation for the final move which will be made on Friday. We had hoped that all of this could have happened on a weekend but with the delays encountered and the holiday this weekend we decided that as to not delay the project any longer a weekday final move would be appropriate.

So as it stands now we are going to make the final move starting at about 2pm on Friday with the goal to have it on the foundation by 5pm. I invite you all to come and be part of this event and to help us celebrate the culmination of this phase of the project and the beginning of a new chapter in the 116 year history of Hawthorne Station.

Station moved a little 9/15

Everyone,

I am happy to say that Hawthorne station got moved about 25 feet today and everything went well. The plan right now is for the station to be moved right up to the foundation on Thursday and then on Friday afternoon, probably around 2pm, the station will be moved onto the new foundation. We were trying our best to have this all happen on a weekend, but conditions and situation just are not going to allow that to happen.

So if you can make it to the station on Friday afternoon you can witness history and the culmination of years of work by many VRA members. If you can not make it on Friday please be sure to stop down when you can and see is going on.

Also, once the station is moved we are going to need to get everything out of Andrea’s, Chris’s and my mother in laws garages and get everything back into the station and down into the new basement. The addition will be built and the electrical work will be done as soon as possible.

We will need to get people down to the station to do work in and outside as often as we can. We are going to try and get the station ready for April 29th, 2011 which means fund raising, donations and even grants or loans. If you would like to donate or know of someone who would please let us know. Being a 501c3 non-profit group donations can be tax deductible.

I hope to see you on Friday and or at the up coming work sessions,
KC

Station Move 9/15

Hello All!
Well, as is common with these kind of projects, we have had another change in the move date for the Hawthorne Station.  As of today, the move will take place Friday, Sept 17th, in the afternoon.  Saturday is a major Jewish holiday, and the Mayor of Hawthorne will be in observance of it.  As such, we need to have this happen before sundown on Friday.  The tentative time will be 2 pm, but keep an eye on your email for exact time!

As always, this is all still tentative, and we will keep all members appraised of any changes as soon as we can.

Thanks everyone for your continued help with this huge project, and hope to see as many people as possible on Friday!

Hawthorne station update 7/28

Everyone,
I am very pleased to report that the work to move Hawthorne Station is progressing quite nicely.  I want to thank Justin for the countless hours he has spent at the station when I was not able to be there due to work, yes sometimes I have to do that.  Also I want to thank Charles, Jon, Matt and Paul for helping out as well.
As of today all of the foundation is in and is now waiting to dry before the next step can be taken.  By next week the floor should be poured and a few weeks after that the building mover can begin the delicate task of moving the station to her new home.
We still need to get more stuff out of the station and do some other work in preparation for the move so I would like to call for a work day this Saturday July 31st at 10am.  If you have a few hours to lend a hand please come on down.  While you are there you can see all the work that has been done.  To give you a taste of the progress I am attaching a few pictures.

Hawthorne station update 9/9/2010

Today the steel went onto the foundation so that the station could be slid onto it and the steel plates were started to be laid out between the station and the foundation.  I have attached a few photos to show you all what is going on.
With this work now done the next step is to prepare the building to be moved which includes among other things the attaching and tightening of the cables that will be used to keep the building square while it is moved.
In speaking with the mover he thinks everything should be ready by Tuesday or maybe Wednesday of next week and he could move the building at that time.  But in an effort to make it so we can all see the move take place we decided to shoot for moving the building Saturday September 18th starting at 7am.  This should allow for any other delays and for the move to happen when the railroad has no traffic.
So, I know I have given us all dates in that past that were not met but this time I feel very good that the mover will be ready.  So mark your calendars and wake up early on the 18th and come on down and be part of watching history.
That all being said if anything changes I will let you know.
By the way a hole has been cut in the floor in the station to access the underside for the move, so be careful if you go inside.
Cross your fingers,
KC
